You Beauty Discovery Box- May 2017 Review

About the box
It's a bit different from most beauty subscriptions. You get a menu at the beginning of every month, and you choose from that what you want to receive that month. You usually get a couple of extra sachet type samples thrown in too.

There are three membership levels.

  • Pick two products a month for £6.95
  • Pick three products a month for £8.95
  • Pick four products a month for £10.95

What I got
This month, like last month, I am still a gold member so got to choose four products from the 'menu'.

This month was the 'Global Edit', which basically means the products in the edit are from all over the world. This is nice because it means you get to try things you might not normally find on UK websites and shops.

The first item I chose was the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser (£8.99, full size 236ml).This brand has been around for a while and it seems like everyone loves it, so I jumped on the chance to finally try it. It's meant to be good for acne prone skin like mine so I'm going to see if it helps. It's suitable for all skin types and can apparently be used with or without water which is quite handy.

Next is the Andalou Naturals Instant Brighten & Tighten Hydro Serum Facial Mask ($4.99 US dollars which is approx. £3.85, full size). This is a sheet mask, using 'fruit stem cell science', vitamin C and Turmeric (everyone's raving about turmeric right now it seems), it hydrates, improves skin tones and brightens and tightens appearance of skin. It's also vegan and cruelty free which I love. I mostly chose this because when things say brightening it usually means they have some sort of exfoliant in them which really helps my oily skin but I can't tell for sure. I'll give it a go though.

The third item I chose was the Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels (sample size of 1 pair., worth approx £3.12). Here's something weird- I've never tried under eye gels or patches before. I guess because I'm only just approaching my 30's, I haven't had much problem with tired skin or dark circles around my eyes. But now I'm definitely feeling it, especially when I get a migraine! I'm wondering whether it would be nice to put these in the fridge for 10 minutes before use. These seem to be available in the UK at M&S and Cult Beauty.

The last item I chose was Merci Handy Hand Cleansing Gel (£2.90, full size 30ml). So these have been in just about every box I've read a review about in the UK lately. They're everywhere! But I have to admit, they are lovely- the scent of this one is beautiful, which you don't really expect from something like hand sanitiser. It seems like you can only buy it from the Birchbox website shop in the UK, although I expect you could try eBay too.

This month You Beauty chucked in a special bonus gift for gold members, this bellapierre cosmetics lipstick in 'catwalk' (£14.99, full size). It's a really lovely shade, not scary to wear at all, something you can stick on any time. It contains SPF protection as well as Vitamins C and E.

Finally, they always add in a few little samples or sachets and this month they sent Gazelli Skin Balancing Cleanser 2ml, Reviving Eye Cream 1ml, and Intensive Age Repair Cream 2ml.

Final thoughts
This month was pretty good, but it was again really skincare heavy. I'd love to see a more makeup oriented box soon, I would really enjoy choosing from an edit like that.

* I am not great at maths so the prices I gave for the sample sizes may not be completely accurate! Take them with a small pinch of salt. They're more like a rough guide.
